Session 1.1: THE IMPORTANT USE OF LANGUAGE AND IMAGES IN THE CONTEXT OF DEMENTIA

The Theory of Tom Kitwood Kitwood, T. (1993). (Source: Towards a theory of dementia care: the interpersonal process. Ageing & Society, 13(1), 51-67) underlines psychological needs (Comfort, Identity, Attachment, Occupation and Inclusion) of a person with dementia and how this relates to the communication: communication can be person-strengthening of person-undermining depending on how we get in contact with the PwD.

Adult education has to take in account neuroscience recent acquisitions to better match education goal and target needs. In the case of person with dementia advises will be provided to better target educational goals to right brain: nonverbal, paraverbal and verbal recommendation are developed to improve the better conditions of learning for a person with dementia.

Glossary to verbally, paraverbbaly and un-verbally communicate to person with dementia and family caregivers. In the case of people with dementia calm tone of voice or wide and emphatic gestures to bolster verbal communication contents are explained (T. Kitwood, Framework for quality of life 2016). Different vocabulary for Caregivers about Communication problems, lack of memory, disorientation (e.g. WHO I support, Alzhaimer Federation, Federazione Alzheimer Italia…) are already provided. MYH4D Vocabulary (included non verbal and paraverbal communication) it will be specifically developed for adult teachers and educators who are involved in learning activities with people with dementia, with their caregivers as well as citizens of the community.
