Contrary to popular belief, memory loss, as with all the other cognitive functions, is not a physiological aspect of ageing. During elderly age the ability to acquire new information changes, due to the progressive loss of efficiency of brain systems, but older people can still remember things or create new memories. Studies show that one of the skills most affected by aging is speed: however, it does not mean that you are unable to respond or recall a memory if you leave yourself enough time.
What is memory?
Memory, as the intelligence, is one of the most complex functions of human beings; it is the ability to acquire new information or experiences people face during their lifes and the ability to recall them in the future. There are many kinds of memory, the main ones are: short-term memory, working memory, long term memory, autobiographical memory and prospective memory. Memory is not just about being able to remember things, but plays an important role in human life in maintaining a sense of being oneself, because without memory we lose sense of who we are. Finally, memory is important for maintaining daily independence.
How could you train your memory?
There are several ways to keep memory trained and exercised in daily life, thanks to our brain ability of adaptation and compensation, which continues to be present in the elderly. A possibility is to exercise this cognitive function in a funny way, through some apps you can play in free time (eg. when you’re waiting for the queue) or with board games that you can share with your loved ones. Enjoy yourself in this type of game can have a beneficial effect on your memory and your quality of life.
