Moving independently in your city can improve the quality of your life!

The opportunity to move independently where you live is important to maintain a person’s connection to a social network. But sometimes using public transport may be a challenge for older people. A possible option could be car sharing where this service is present.

And you, which means of transportation do you use? What kind of transport services are present where you live?

The opportunity to move independently around the city or the neighbourhood where they live is important for people living with dementia. Difficulties in independent movement cause loneliness and exclusion from social networking, factors that decrease the well-being of the person living with dementia. Older people who are no longer able to drive must rely on public transport which can become a lifelong challenge for them. Sometimes public transport may not be well-served and there may not be any convenient connections to some places. Also, older people may meet challenges and difficulties during the journey that cause negative feelings. Some potential barriers include crossing a busy street, poor lighting, difficulty finding a place to sit down and rest. Also, people may have orientation problems, meet difficulties in paying for tickets or finding information desks.
Here are some comics and videos describing the impact of everyday travel experiences for people living with dementia:

Inclusive communities try to be mindful of older people's movements by planning more inclusive journeys and considering the difficulties they may face.
Clear and simple road signals and public transport information make a difference and help elderly people to be better oriented. For example, it is important that people can easily find bus stops, gates and access areas or bus stop reservation. Also, safety precautions such as yellow lines or crosswalks should be clearly marked and visible. The use of pictures is preferred over dense writings.

A possible alternative can be car sharing services. Some socio-cultural associations or day-care centres organise transport directly from your home to reach the community centre. Thanks to this service the social activities start from the moment you leave your home, and the journey becomes a socialising opportunity. It is important to maintain the same driver to create a routine.

This is a service in a small town in the UK that rents out small scooters and electric wheelchairs to get around the city centre between stores for shopping. It can be a help for the elderly with mobility problems.
